 조맹효 교수는 고체 및 구조역학을 기반으로 복합재료 유한요소해석기법에 대해 전공하였으며 지난 15년간 연속체역학, 분자동역학 및 제일 원리 계산 등 서로 다른 스케일을 연결하는 멀티스케일 시뮬레이션을 통하여 나노복합재료, 리튬이차전지, 형상기억합금 등 다양한 지능 재료의 미시구조를 고려한 거시적 거동의 해석 연구를 수행하고 있다.

최근에는 빛으로부터 기계적 거동을 일으키는 광반응 구조체에서 일어나는 다중 물리 현상의 메커니즘을 멀티스케일/멀티피직스 해석 기법으로 규명하고, 거시적 광 제어 소프트로봇 요소 설계와 구현에 관한 연구를 진행 중이다.
